Smiles. Ever endearing. From kids to high schoolers, brides and family members (including the family cat or dog and in one case, a duck). I love smiles. After many years as a photographer, I greatly respect those who can create incredibly dramatic expressions, but I like smiles-- the kind that come out when people feel comfortable, not staged. That's the secret to getting them-- making people feel confident with who they are, to not worry about who might be watching.
My oldest, shown below when he was much younger, loved to smile. He would literally wake up with a smile. The rest of the day, he wore a smile. I love the picture of him. It shows a content, very happy kid but as his dad, I see a time when life was a little easier for him. There were fewer "realities" of the world. He simply loved being part of every day.

Now here's a "can't help it" smile! My daughter not being able to hold back at whatever dad said to her. This is one of those times when I became part stand-up comic, part friend, part photographer. I caught her off-guard. She rewarded me with that perfect moment when she forgot about the lens and just reacted. By the way, when I asked her the best way to get a natural, genuine smile from someone, she said, "tickle 'em."

Of course, there are certain situations in which smiles can't be helped. They appear naturally, without any kind of provoking. All I have to do is catch them before they disappear!

With seniors, it’s especially rewarding. That age is such a mix of confidence and uncertainty, excitement and nostalgia. When seniors smile, it’s often the most honest version of themselves they’ve shared in a long while. Getting to capture that? What a privilege.
So yes, I love smiles because behind every one is a story. For a split second, I get to help tell it.
